Behind the scenes on how a page of SaGia is done!
I don't really get this asked a lot to me: what's the process of working on your comic? How do you make your comic or draw it out?
In case you don't want to watch the video version of how I work on a panel of a page of my comic SaGia, I'll break it down:
1. (Not in the video) I first type up the dialogue and action in Google Docs.
2. I work on the illustration in Procreate. This is a panel from chapter 16 (which will release in June or July over at GlobalComix and will be in Volume 3) that I picked. I won't show the entire page due to spoilers, if you're waiting on volume 3's release or just simply waiting for chapter 16 to come out.
I sketch out the drawing in blue; the sketch is rough as you can see. In the above photo, the blue looks lighter; the reason for it is because I draw over the sketch in black, making sure it's perfect. To do this, I lower the opacity of the layer.
3. Once I'm satisfied with the sketch, I finalize the drawing in black.
4. I then add the details. I mainly use a gray color for shading that's needed. In the panel, Jikiru is blushing; to show that she's blushing, I use an airbrush. I fill in any colors of a character that's needed (outfit, hair, eyes, etc.); here, Jikiru's gloves has a dark gray color, so I fill that in. If it was her full body showing, her pants would have color to them, but since this is a closeup shot of her, only the gloves get colored.
Starting with chapter 14, whenever I do a closeup shot of Jikiru, her eyes now have color to them. Sometimes, the goggle lens of Jikiru/Haido get filled in.
5. Text is added and the panel is complete. I repeat the process for the other panels. To make things easier, I have Google Docs installed on my iPad and I copy the text from the app and paste it in Procreate.
How long does a page usually take me? Two pages in one day, which I mostly do, takes me around two to three hours to complete, depending on the scene and how much details I want to capture in the artwork. If it's just a single page, it may take me an hour or two. If it's something like a closeup shot of a character, it may take me less than two hours to complete, as the character takes up the entire page.
What software do I use to draw in? Procreate.
What's the length of a chapter? Around 20-30 pages. If the chapter is long, such as chapter 15 (12 pages of dialogue and action in Google Docs) which I released back in February on GlobalComix, then it may be around 40 pages. Chapter 17 might be the next longest chapter after chapter 15 (about 14 pages in Google Docs). The shortest chapter as of this writing is chapter 3 (My Name is Jikiru!).
